BUILD Math Centers

B.U.I.L.D Math Centers

Here is what my B.U.I.L.D Math Centers looked like this week!

Buddy Games: The students took turns drawing a card from the middle of the table. These are 10 Frame playing cards. The 1st player to get number 1-10 first won. If they pulled a card they already had they had to place it back into the bottom of the pile!

Using Manipulatives: The students pull an addition flash card from the pile. Then they solve the problem by counting out the "rings" and building the addition sentence.

Independent Work: The student pulls out two 10 Frame playing cards. Then they write an addition sentence and solve. They place those cards in the bottom of the pile and pull two more cards. The game continues until center time is over.

Learning About Numbers: Students roll the dice to create addition problems on their 10 Frame. They use apples to represent the problem and write the addition sentence using a dry erase marker. When they solve they simply erase and roll the dice again to start a new problem!

Doing Math: Students pull an addition flash card and solve using a number line! They can use the long number line or use the Ziploc bag number line. They must write the completed addition sentence using dry erase markers before pulling a new card for the next problem!

Some Odds & Ends with APPLES .... Throwing in a Mix of Activities

Odds and Ends...
So I have fallen WAY behind on posts so here is a mix of things we have been up to!

Retelling Review
This week our Reading Skill was reviewing the skill of retelling. I read "The Three Little Pigs" to the class and we reviewed the "Give Me Five" retell strategy I taught the week prior. I then gave them puppets and instructed them to use the puppets to retell the story to their partners. THEY LOVED IT!

10 Frames and Apples
We have been learning different strategies we can use to add numbers. We introduced the concept of using a 10 Frame to help us add. Since we have also been learning about Johnny Appleseed, what better way to integrate our learning than by using apples in our 10 Frames!
The students rolled a dice and place that many apples on the 10 Frame. Then they roll the dice again and place that many apples on the 10 Frame. After adding the apples up they must use their dry erase markers to write an addition sentence for their 10 Frame.
Erase and repeat .... how easy!

Number Line Madness

After learning about 10 Frames, we literally JUMPED into number lines. I pulled out my BIG number line mat and AMAZED the kiddos!

Here you see a student representing an addition problem! I would call out a problem and then ask students to show me that problem by HOPPING on the number line and landing on the answer! I can easily say ALL of my student were engaged!
Then I pulled out more tricks .....

These are Ziploc bag Number lines that I had seen on Pinterest! OF COURSE I had to rush home and make them for my kiddos. You place a piece of plain paper inside the bag, use a permanent marker to draw on your number line, and PRESTO you have an interactive homemade number line! The students use the "zipper" to move on the number line! They can also write the addition sentence on the Ziploc bag using a dry erase marker!

 Apple Bonds .... Number Bonds

We have been moving right along in Math! On top of mastering the 10 Frame and Number line, I also introduced the class to Number Bonds! I had to find a FUN way to teach this and since we were learning about Johnny Appleseed, why not make Apple Bonds!?

I started by modeling Number Bonds for the class and labeling the Whole and Parts. We did several examples together whole class.

Then we made our own Apple Bonds and used buttons to represent the numbers!

 JOHNNY APPLESEED FUN

We wrapped up our week on Friday by completing some FUN Johnny Appleseed activities!

I brought in an Apple Peeler that peels and cores your apples in no time! The kiddos thought I was MAGIC! I even let some student try it out themselves (since it was impossible for them to get hurt)!
We put all the peeled apples in a Crock-Pot along with some other ingredients to make applesauce! YUMMY!

Recipe
Apples are cooking and they made the classroom smell SO GOOD!

Soybean Festival Field Trip

We Survived our 1st Field Trip!
Each year we walk down to our town's annual Soybean Festival! The kids have a BLAST riding rides and playing games! Check out how much FUN we had!
These boys are having a blast!

Smile girls!

A former student asked me to ride the Ferris Wheel with her, how could I refuse!?

Great view of our downtown from the top of the Ferris Wheel!

Setting the stage for Lee Brice who is planning on performing later in the night!

We are hot, tired, and ready for lunch!

You couldn't ask for a better group of 1st Grade Teachers!
1st Grade ROCKS!

These boys look like they are up to no good!

I know all about ADJECTIVES ... GIVE ME FIVE!

Give me FIVE ....
5 Finger Retell that is!!

Our Reading Skill this week was being able to Retell a story! I used an anchor chart (that I forgot to capture) and introduced the skill. Since we had already discussed Character, Setting, and BME... it was only a matter of putting those skills together.
We read the popular folk tale "The Lion and the Mouse." I think it is SOOO neat to see the kiddos enjoy these timeless stories that I  listened to when I was a child!
We then discussed the Characters, Setting, Beginning, Middle, and End of the story as I scribed their answers on the board. Then we created this little craft pictured above.
This was so easy to do and they loved it!
For a more formal assessment we read our weekly story from the text "School Day," and we completed a worksheet that had the students complete their own 5 Finger Retell questions.

Let's Learn About ADJECTIVES!

We have learned about Nouns and Verbs ..... so it was time to BUST out the Adjectives!
I use this activity EVERY year and LOVE IT!
First we learn what adjectives are by looking at an anchor chart!
I captured this on my phone...

Then I get a blank anchor chart and put my name in the middle! The kiddos come up and brainstorm words that describe ME!
Let me tell you .... this is a great CONFIDENCE boost for myself because kids are so SWEET!
Then I pull out a MYSTERY  gift bag! You immediately hear the oo's and ahh's! I have them brainstorm some adjectives with a partner to describe the bag. We also jot down some predictions of what is in the bag!
After we share our thoughts, I reveal our class gift!
POP ROCK CANDY!
And the class goes WILD!
I allow them to eat the candy, but they must jot down 6 adjectives to describe it!
SO MUCH FUN!
Here are some pictures of my kiddos enjoying the activity!

B.U.I.L.D Math Centers

B.U.I.L.D  Math Skills with
Math Centers!

This week I started my B.U.I.L.D Math Centers! The first day was a SUCCESS and the students are so excited!
This picture shows how my B.U.I.L.D centers are organized!

The posters/signs were all free on TPT just click here.
The bins I picked up from the Dollar Tree (of course)! I will eventually buy little hooks to place the group names on so that I can easily rotate them, however post-it notes are doing the job until I make a trip to Wal-Mart!

NOW this is the IMPORTANT part .... The activities I place in my Math centers are tools/activities that we have already been exposed to in class. If you see in past blogs I used tools for 10 more 10 less, even and odd, and etc. These are the activities in my Math Centers. This way the students are familiar with the tools/activities and they can complete them independently. ALSO my math centers serve the purpose of reviewing past skills taught, while I pull groups to work on current struggles.
SO... this week in Math we are learning how to add using pictures. You will not see my students working on this skill in centers due to it being new material .... HOWEVER you will see these skills next week in center time! MAKE SENSE?

HERE are pictures of my kiddos participating in their centers today (their 1st day at B.U.I.L.D centers)...
Buddy Games
This center should be activities that allow students to work with a partner. Hence the name "Buddy!" These students (only 1 was captured in the picture silly me) are working on putting together a 100 chart puzzle.

Using Manipulatives
This center should house activities that require students to use manipulatives. Last week we studied Even and Odd numbers. One activity we completed required students to look at a number, count out that many connecting cubes, and them make "partners." If all the cubes made partners the number was Even, if there was an Odd man out the number was Odd. So in this center I gave them a Color by Code Even and Odd worksheet BUT made them use the connecting cubes to figure out if each number was Odd or Even.

Independent Math (Interactive Math)
This center can be named "Independent Math" or "Interactive Math" whichever suits your fancy!
I gave the students our dry erase "T", marker, eraser, dice, and 100 chart. They rolled the dice and then had to answer 1 more 1 less 10 more 10 less. See the past post labeled "10 More 10 Less" to see an example of this activity. Once again we had already completed this activity in previous lessons, so the students needed no explanation on how to complete their activity!
(Sorry I did not capture a photo of this center )

Learning about Numbers
This center will have the students deepen their number sense. This week I have the students cutting apart a 100 chart and then gluing it back together (like a puzzle). This will review their skills of 10 more 10 less and also strengthen their number identification and counting skills.

Doing Math
This center can really be ANYTHING you want it to be! Eventually I will make this center be Math Tasks .... but my kiddos have not been exposed to that enough yet to be expected to do it independently! SO this week I gave them 2 Math center games to choose from. The first game is pictured above.
This is similar to Memory. The students have yellow cards which have dots stamped on them. They also have a stack of green cards that have the number and number word written on them. They take turns flipping over a yellow and green card. If they match they keep the cards, if they don't they flip the card back over. The student with the most cards at the end win!

These students are playing the dominoes math center. The students each turn over one domino. They then name the amount of their domino. The student whose domino is the biggest number gets to keep the dominoes. The person with the most dominoes at the end wins! FUN way to compare numbers!

CRAZY WEEK .... I'm playing catch up!

CRAZY WEEK!
I feel as if I have been hanging on by a thread this week! I've been working around my daughter's cheerleading, my son's football, cooking dinner, and doing school work!
(notice how I left out housework ... I'm way behind on that)
Not that I mind .... check out my babies!

Here is a GLIMPSE of what I HAVE managed to do in my classroom this week!
With AIMS Web testing taking place and a Field Trip on Friday, I feel very accomplished to have even posted this week!

In Reading we worked on Realism vs. Fantasy!
I have taught this lesson every year and the kiddos LOVE it!
Not to mention I'm throwing in some Social Studies!

I have my anchor chart already labeled "Realism vs. Fantasy" and I explain what each genre means as we record it on the chart!
I then read the story "Grace for President."

We discuss if their story is Realism or Fantasy and then record WHY we think so!

Then we listen to the story "Duck for President" via YouTube!

We discuss this book, and add our findings to our chart!
Then we read our weekly reading textbook story, and I have the students write an exit slip explaining if the story is Realism or Fantasy!

Introducing Vicky Verb...

I introduced Verbs this week and I LOVE teaching VERBS!
I started with my Vicky Verb anchor chart that didn't have any of the verbs recorded!
My smart kiddos brainstormed all those verbs during carpet whole group discussion!
We completed a cute Action Verb activity, but I was too hectic fitting in the lesson .... I forgot to capture it on camera!

Sentence or Not a Sentence?

What is a complete sentence? When I ask students to write me a complete sentence, most students don't really understand what that entails!
ENTER subject and predicate lesson!
Now that we have learned about Nouns and Verbs .... this is pretty easy to introduce.
I modeled for the class how to find the subject and predicate and informed them that EVERY sentence must have a subject and predicate!
Then they were given either a "subject" or "predicate" and had to find the partner! I had cut the pieces like puzzles so that they could easily see if their subject and predicates matched!
They loved it!

Then they had to identify the subject and predicate in their sentence and complete a cut and paste sentence sort!
